Horses

Modern Horse Skull
Description: The horse is a large land mammal notable for its speed, strength, and endurance. Horses are members of the Equidae family, which also includes zebras and asses. Like all equids, the horse is extremely well adapted to traveling long distances with great efficiency and to surviving on a diet of nutrient-poor, high-fiber grasses. The horse is an intensely social animal, forming strong associations with members of its herd and possessing a keen ability to recognize subtle social cues. These instinctive behaviors form the basis of the horse’s ability to bond with and obey a human trainer.

White Rhinoceros

White Rhinoceros Skull (Ceratotherium Simum)
Description: The white rhinoceros is larger and heavier than the black rhinoceros and can be readily identified by the hump on the back of ifs neck and its square-shaped upper lip. The head is carried low for grazing. The horns are longer and thinner, and can reach an astounding five plus feet in length. The ears are broad and have hairs on the edges. This rhinoceros can reach 13 feet in length and five and one half feet at the shoulders, and it weighs upward of 5000 pounds, making it the third largest living land animal behind the elephant and the hippopotamus. The white rhinoceros is less aggressive than the black rhinoceros. It rarely charges, and males only engage in combat during the mating season. The males are usually solitary, but females with calves may be seen in groups. It feeds on grass, grazing with its broad, square lip. It, too, needs water daily, and often wallows at length in water or mud. It moves slowly and customarily uses the same tracks and paths, active both during the day and at night. It has poor sight, but has acute hearing.

Tapir Skulls

Malayan Tapir Skull (Tapirus Indicus)
Description: The color of the adult Malayan tapir is unmistakable: the forward part of the body and the hind legs are black, and the rest of the body is white. The young have quite a different color - brown with white longitudinal markings. The hide is not thick and, like the pig, is covered by just a few scattered hairs. The tail is no more than a large stump, but the nose is extended. These tapirs reach six and one half feet in length, almost three and one half feet at the shoulders, and can weigh 600 pounds - not all that much smaller than a zebra. This tapir is primarily solitary, but sometimes lives in pairs in the thickest parts of the forest, where it can move about at considerable speed with minimal difficulty. It is mostly nocturnal. Tapirs often follow the same tracks for years, making well-worn thoroughfares in the dense undergrowth. It feeds on tender plants, preferably near water, which is a necessity for this species. Tapirs like to remain submerged for hours on end.

Tapir Skulls

South American Tapir Skull (Tapirus Terrestris)
Description: The adults have a uniform pinkish brown coloration while the young are brownish and have whitish stripes and spots until 6 to 8 months of age. The adults possess a kind of sparse mane, but otherwise the hair is short. A rather long elephant-like nose is formed by the upper lip and the nose, while the small tail is inconspicuous. Like its Malayan cousin, the Brazilian tapir can reach six and one half feet long, three and a half feet at the shoulders, and over 500 pounds. This solitary species lives in forests and near water, and can swim quite well. It is timid, fleeing at the first sign of danger, but is capable of defending itself by biting. The tapir's greatest enemy is the powerful jaguar. Tapirs are particularly vulnerable at night when they emerge from the water to sleep on the river bank. They feed mainly on plants and sometimes make forays into cultivated fields. It has always been a favorite prey of the native Indian hunters, who will sometimes capture the young and keep them in captivity until they reach maturity.
