tail. Its coat is fawn to dark brown, and in some individuals
from the south-eastern part of its range there is a black or

nose and tail only have very short, sparse fur. As with other
anteaters, the nose and jaws are very long, the ears and eyes
small, and the tongue can be extended 40cm from the mouth.

"Pangolin" is of French derivation for "rolling up into a ball,"
which the pangolin does to protect itself from enemies. Mainly
terrestrial, but some species are at times also arboreal. It

sandy ground. This animal looks like a lizard-shaped pine cone,
with tiny ears and a large tail which in some species is longer
than its body. It is completely covered with scales. Three of
the five toes on the forefeet are well developed and have large
strong claws. The claws on the hind feet are shorter. Its head
and body length is about 20", and it weighs about 20 lbs.

This armoured mammal was once widespread in the tropical forests
east of the Andes, from Venezuela to Argentina. The largest of
the armadillos, the giant armadillo can grow up to 1.5 m in
length and weigh up to 55 kg. They feed on ants, termites and
the occasional snake. The giant armadillo seems to have become
scarce everywhere within its range because of over-hunting, the
expansion of settlement, and the corresponding loss of its
forest habitat.
