a tail of about six inches. It weighs up to 15 pounds. The
little that is known about this species has come from studies in
captivity. It is territorial and hunts in packs of adults and
young. It swims well and will pursue prey into the water. It is
nocturnal, often spending the day in deserted armadillo dens. It
will prey on species larger than itself, although it feeds

African Hunting Dog (Lycaeon pictus)
Classification: Order Carnivora
Description:
The African hunting dog is the same size and shape as a large
dog, but its mottled coloring and large ears make it
unmistakable. The head is large and resembles that of a hyena.
The muzzle is black and the forehead has a black line in the
middle. The legs are long and slender, and the feet have only
four toes. The coat pattern is never the same in any two African
hunting dogs. The tail has a white plume at the tip. The head
and body is about 40 inches long and the tail, 12 to16 inches.
They weigh up to 66 pounds. This dog lives in large packs of
five to twenty animals, sometimes as many as fifty. It is one of
the most efficient of all predators, and will attack victims of
all sizes, from large elands to small hares. Its organized
method of hunting enables it to bring down its prey quickly,
sometimes in a few seconds. The prey is fed upon, sometimes
while still alive, and may be entirely consumed within a few
minutes.

The legs are short and covered with a coat which is almost
black. The tail is short and bushy. The body is dark brown and
yellowish (because of the yellow tips of the hairs). Among the
dog family, this species has the least bladelike teeth, and

of teeth to 44. The length of the head and body is about 24
inches with a tail of about 7 inches. Its weight is about 16
pounds. This is a solitary, nocturnal creature which moves with
great caution in dense woodlands and forests, especially in the
presence of humans. It lives in a deep burrow dug in the ground.

Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis)
Classification: Order Carnivora
Description:
The island fox is found only on the Channel Islands, located off
the coast of southern California between Los Angeles and Santa
Barbara. The island fox lives on six of the eight islands and
each island has its own distinct subspecies of the fox. The
island fox is found nowhere else in the world and is a flagship
species for Channel Islands National Park. The island fox is a
miniature version of the mainland grey fox. Mainland foxes are
believed to have colonized the northern Channel Islands some
16,000-20,000 years ago. It is thought that native Chumash
tribes, who kept the foxes as pets, transported them to the
southern islands some 10,000 years later. Over time, the island
foxes developed into a distinct species, with sufficient
inter-island variations to justify subspecies designation for
each island. Subspecies distinctions include variations in tail
length, muzzle shape, fur color and other attributes. Slightly
larger than an average housecat and weighing 3-6 pounds, island
fox feed largely on insects, mice and wild-growing fruits. They
can live as long as 10 years, generally mate for life and give
birth to litters of 2-5 pups in mid April.

and body is about 44 inches, and the tail is about 15 inches
long. This wolf weighs up to 55 pounds. This is an elusive
species which lives in remote areas. It lives alone or in pairs,
and is generally nocturnal. It hunts by ambushing small prey,

Gray wolf, Timber Wolf(Canis lupus)
Classification: Order Carnivora
Description:
The wolf is the largest member of the dog family. It is a
powerful animal and has great endurance. It varies in color from
white in Arctic regions to black in parts of North America, but
is usually grayish or brownish. Color and size vary greatly in

170 lbs. Wolves tend to live in packs of 5 to 15 individuals
based around a dominant pair and governed by strict domestic
hierarchies for both sexes. It hunts in this pack, the preferred
prey being large herbivores such as elk, deer, bison, and
mountain sheep, but it will also take smaller game, most

Side-Stripe Jackal (Canis adustus)
Classification: Order Carnivora
Description:
The side striped jackal ranges throughout central and southern
Africa. They prefer the woodlands and humid areas of the
savannah. Their range overlaps the golden and silver backed
jackal's ranges. They have the widest distribution in Africa of
all the jackals. The side striped jackal look very similar to
their close relative, the silver backed jackal, except they have
a broader and shorter muzzle. Its name comes from the paler
stripes that run alongside the flanks of its body. It is a
grayish brown color with a dark tail that has a white tip. From
a distance, the stripes are not too distinct, they kind of blend
in together and look like a solid mass of grey. It is only up
close that one can see the banding patterns in their fur. The
males are noticeably larger than the females. They have larger
canines than jackal species. Scent glands are located on the
face and in the anal area. Side striped jackals typically have 4
mammae.

The coyote is similar in appearance to the gray wolf. The color
and texture of the coat varies geographically. Northern coyotes
have thicker fur, and black patches may be found on the front of
the forelimbs and near the base and tip of the tail. The ears
are longer than those of the wolf. Length is 40 to 54 inches
with the tail adding about 16 more inches. It weighs between 33
and 44 pounds. The coyote eats a varied diet including small
rodents, rabbits, carrion, and small domestic animals. They live
normally alone or in pairs. Occasionally, they live in large
groups, but there is no evidence of them hunting in packs.
Coyotes communicate with each other by sound, sight and even
taste. Like the other members of the family of dogs and jackals,
the coyote uses feces and urine as signals to mark its
territory. It is very active, especially in the early evening
and in winter.

Arctic Fox Skull (Alopexn Lagopus Inmuitus)
Classification: Order Carnivora
Description:
This fox has short legs and a snub face. The soles of its feet
are covered with long hair in the winter, enabling it to walk
more easily in fresh snow. The coat is white, except for a few
black hairs on the tip of the tail, in winter. Some Arctic foxes
have two color phases in summer. First the coat turns
cream-colored with darker color on the back; in the second, the
"blue" phase, it takes on various grayish, dark bluish hues. The
head and body are about 20 to 28 inches long with the tail
adding 12 to 16 inches. They may weigh anywhere from six to
twenty pounds. The blue fox lives in burrows, and is mostly
nocturnal. It is a monogamous species; pairs remain together
throughout the breeding season and perhaps longer. There is a
high mortality rate because of the harsh climatic conditions. It
feeds on anything edible: garbage, reindeer droppings, carrion,
rodents, birds, eggs, hares, and even berries, Migratory
movements may take the Arctic fox several hundred miles from the
lair where the young are born.

Domestic Dog Skull (Canis Familiaris)
Classification: Order Carnivora
Description:
The domestic dog is a member of the family Canidae, a diverse
group of carnivores which contains 36 extant species. These
include wolves, jackals, and foxes, as well as the coyote, the
maned wolf, the bush dog, the African wild dog, and the raccoon
dog. Within this family, the dog is most closely related to
wolves, jackals and the coyote as these canines all have the
same number of chromosomes and are capable of interbreeding to
produce fertile offspring. This makes all of these species
potential dog ancestors, and all have been suggested at one
point to have played a part in the dog's ancestry. In fact,
because of the extreme variation that exists between different
dog breeds, it has been assumed in the past that multiple
species of canids have shared in the ancestry of the domestic
dog.
