Dolphin

Bottlenose Dolphin Skull (Tursiops Truncatus)
Classification: Family Delphinidae
Description: The basic color of the bottle-nosed dolphin is a silvery gray. In the southern parts of its range the color tends to be darker. The "beak" is short and the mouth seems to be permanently smiling, and the lower jaw protrudes farther than the upper. There are 23 to 25 teeth on each side of each jaw, each tooth about 1/2 inch across. The dorsal fin has a distinctive triangular shape, angled backwards. Bottle noses grow to about 12 feet in length, and average about 500 lbs - but may reach over 1400 lbs. This is the dolphin best known to the general public, and its exploits and intelligence have received much attention. These dolphins live in pods usually numbering about a dozen individuals but sometimes as many as several hundred will be in one area. They enjoy approaching ships and following them at the same speed for some time. They also like to play, jumping out of the water and splashing. This dolphin can swim at a speed of at least 14 knots (a knot is slightly more than one mile-per-hour) and dive for more than seven minutes. They feed on all types of fish.

Porpoise

Common Harbor Porpoise Skull
Description:Phocinidae
Description: The harbor porpoise is a small, stocky animal. The dorsal side is brown or dark grey, converging to a lighter grey on the flanks. The triangular dorsal fin is located in the middle of the back. The average length is 1.5 m. with a maximum size of about 2 m. Females are slightly larger than males. They weigh 45-65 kg, with a maximum of 90 kg. The harbor porpoise is a coastal species, limited to the cold temperate and sub-arctic waters of the Northern Hemisphere. In the Eastern North Atlantic it ranges from the Kara Sea south to Senegal, Africa, including the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Western Mediterranean. There is an isolated population in the Black Sea. In the Western North Atlantic, this species ranges from southern Greenland to North Carolina, USA; and there is also a population around Iceland. In the Eastern Pacific, it ranges from Alaska (up to Point Barrow) south to California. In the Western Pacific, the species ranges from the Bering Sea to northern Japan. There is no clear migration. Most of the traveling seems to be related to movement of food resources.

Whales

Beluga White Whale Skull
Description: The Beluga's body is creamy white in adults and a darker bluish gray in the young. There are 8 to 10 teeth on each side of each jaw, each tooth about 2/3 inch in diameter. There is a low ridge on the back, but no dorsal fin, and the lateral fins are rounded. The cranium is asymmetrical with the blowhole is situated to the left. Total length of the Beluga is up to 18 ft, with a weight of 3500 lbs, females somewhat smaller. This whale moves about in pods of up to 200 individuals. It swims slowly and barely exposes its body to the air when it comes to the surface to breathe. It feeds on bottom fish and molluscs. It migrates regularly from north to south in the fall and returns in the spring. It will often swim up the larger rivers in its area, such as the Yukon and the St. Lawrence in Canada, and has even been sighted in the Rhine River in Germany.

Whales

Dwarf Sperm Whale Skull
Description: Similar to Kogia breviceps but smaller (rarely reaching 3 m in length); dorsal fin higher (relatively and actually) and located near center of back; number of teeth in the lower jaw normally 8-11, rarely as many as 13; usually three rudimentary teeth in each upper jaw. The total lengths of adults are usually less than 2.5 m, rarely to 2.7 m. with weight less than 300 kg. Like Kogia breviceps, the dwarf sperm whale is probably cosmomarine and is found in warm water oceans. In the western North Atlantic, these whales are known from Virginia to the Lesser Antilles and the Gulf of Mexico. They strand fairly frequently but not so often as K. breviceps. Dwarf sperm whales make deep and prolonged dives in quest of food. Squid and fish are known to occur in the diet.

Whales

Hubb's Beaked Whale Skull
Description: This is one of the most mysterious of all whales; scientists know little about it. No one's ever seen one riding a boat's bow wave or leaping in the air, as many dolphins do. Much of what we do know comes from studying dead whales washed up on beaches. Most of them have long scars and scratches on their backs, which may be from fights between males.

Whales

Pygmy Sperm Whale Skull (Mounted)
Description: The Pygmy Sperm Whale is widely distributed in tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate seas. Records of sightings are scattered from Ireland and the Netherlands down the North Atlantic to the Canary Islands and Madiera, and from Nova Scotia to Cuba. Other sightings have been recorded in the South Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, and the Indo-Pacific. This robust whale is really a smaller version of the Sperm Whale, with the same large, bulbous head containing spermaceti and the short narrow mouth. The snout is pointed in young animals but reverts to the familiar rectangular shape in adulthood. The slightly-hooked dorsal fin and the flippers are small and stumpy, and the broad tail flukes are less rigid than those of dolphins. The body colour is a dark bluish grey, fading to a slightly pinkish off-white underneath. A thin whitish line runs downwards from behind the eye and the external ear to the throat, appearing as a false 'gill'. Maximum weight is 400kg, and a maximum length of 3.3m is attained in both sexes. There are no teeth in the upper jaw, but around 24-32 in the lower. Mounted / Container

Whales

Killer Whale Skull
Description: The black and white color is distinctive. An easy way to identify this species is by the great length of the dorsal fin, which can reach 5 1/2 feet in adult males. The first three or four cervical vertebrae are fused. There are ten to twelve conical teeth on each side of each jaw. This dolphin can reach 30 feet long and weigh up to nine tons, with the females somewhat smaller. This whale usually lives in pods of two to eight individuals, but sometimes increasing to as many as 40. Isolated individuals are always males. It attacks any animal which might be considered prey, including penguins, seals, fish, whales, and other species of dolphins. It is never threatened by predators and is quite unafraid of approaching ships. It can swim at speeds of up to 35 mph and makes huge leaps out of the water. Sometimes it will stay motionless in the water with its head above the surface to see what is going on.
